PLA and PLA+: where almost everyone should start

PLA prints at a low temperature (roughly 190–220°C nozzle, 50–60°C bed), does not need an enclosure, barely warps and has almost no smell. If you have just bought your first printer, buy PLA or PLA+ and nothing else until your prints come out clean.

PLA+ is PLA with additives that make it less brittle. A PLA+ part bends a little before it snaps, where plain PLA cracks. For brackets, holders, toys and anything that gets handled, PLA+ is the better default, and it costs about the same.

The one weakness that matters in Bangladesh: heat. PLA starts to soften at around 55–60°C. A part left on a car dashboard, on a rooftop or next to a hot motor will sag. For anything that sits in the sun or near heat, move up to PETG or ASA.

PETG: the practical upgrade

PETG is tougher than PLA, handles roughly 75–80°C, and resists water and many chemicals. It is the usual choice for functional parts: machine guards, clips, water-contact parts, tool holders. It prints at about 230–250°C with a 70–80°C bed and works on open-frame printers like the Bambu Lab A1.

The trade-offs: PETG strings more than PLA and absorbs moisture from the air quickly. In our humidity, a spool left open for a few weeks will print with bubbles and rough surfaces. Keep it sealed (see storage below).

ABS and ASA: strong, heat-resistant, and fussy

ABS and ASA both survive close to 100°C and can be sanded and glued well. ASA adds UV resistance, so it does not go yellow and brittle in sunlight — the right pick for signage, outdoor fittings and vehicle parts.

Both shrink as they cool, which causes warping and cracked layers on an open printer. They need an enclosed machine such as the Bambu Lab P1S, a 90–100°C bed, and a ventilated room because of the fumes. If you own an open-frame printer, choose PETG instead.

TPU: flexible prints

TPU 95A is rubber-like: it bends, stretches and absorbs impact. Use it for gaskets, bumpers, grips, wheels and protective cases. It needs slow print speeds and a direct-drive extruder, which Bambu Lab printers have. It is also very sensitive to moisture, so dry storage is not optional.

Silk, matte, wood, marble and glow filaments

These are PLA with a different look, and they print almost like normal PLA:

Silk PLA+ — glossy, metallic finish for trophies, vases and decorative pieces.

Matte PLA — hides layer lines, good for figures and architectural models.

Wood PLA and Marble PLA — textured, natural-looking finishes.

Glow in the dark PLA — abrasive, so a hardened steel nozzle is the safe choice for regular use.

Which filament works with which printer?

Printer type

Prints well

Avoid

Open frame (Bambu Lab A1 Mini, A1, most budget printers)

PLA, PLA+, PETG, TPU, silk and matte PLA

ABS, ASA, large nylon parts

Enclosed (Bambu Lab P1S, P2S)

All of the above plus ABS and ASA

—

Every filament we sell is 1.75mm, which fits practically all current desktop FDM printers — Bambu Lab, Creality, Anycubic, Elegoo, Prusa and others.

Storing filament in Bangladesh's humidity

Moisture is the most common cause of bad prints here, especially in monsoon months. Wet filament pops and hisses at the nozzle, strings badly and leaves a rough surface.

Keep opened spools in a sealed box or zip bag with silica gel.

Do not leave PETG, TPU, ABS or ASA on the printer for days between prints.

If a spool has gone wet, it can usually be recovered by drying it in a filament dryer for a few hours.
